The Story

Teacher: Gul E Raana (Wenlin Studio)

Date: Saturday 15 November 2025 (10am-1pm)

Objectives:
In this class, participants will create a mirror-work ornament inspired by the embroideries of the Banjara, a nomadic tribe from the Indian subcontinent. Guided by Gul E Raana, participants will learn how to embroider a flat mirror (sheesha) onto fabric and turn it into a beautiful hanging ornament — perfect for a bag or hanging on a Christmas tree.

All hardware needed to assemble and decorate the ornament will be provided, except for the large bells, which can be purchased separately at Rosa Pomar’s shop.

This workshop is taught in English by Gul E Raana, originally from Punjab, Pakistan, and founder of Wenlin Studio — a project dedicated to cultural embroidery traditions and natural dyeing techniques.

Contents:
  • Techniques of traditional mirror-work embroidery
  • Attaching Beads on an ornament shape
  • Making a thread tassel
  • Attaching hardware and finished hanging decorative ornament
Materials: All essential materials are provided. Participants who prefer to use their own embroidery frames, needles, or thimbles are welcome to bring them.

Requirements:
Participants must be 14 years or older. Basic needlework experience is helpful but not required. This workshop is taught in English.

Withdrawals/refunds: the registration fee will be refunded to students who for some reason cannot participate in the workshop and communicate their withdrawal up to ten days before the workshop date.

Location: Rua Maria Andrade, 50A (Lisbon)

Please note: The workshop will only take place if a minimum of three people sign up to participate. In the event that we don’t reach minimum attendance of three participants until five days before the date of the workshop, the workshop will be cancelled and any participants who had signed up will be contacted for a refund, rescheduling (if possible) or shop voucher to be arranged. In the event that the workshop is cancelled by the tutor due to unforeseen circumstances, we will apply the same procedure: refund of the fee, exchange for a shop voucher or, should another workshop date already be booked, a rescheduling of the workshop.
